Rick Miller

Principal Hydropower Consultant, HDR

Mr. Miller is a civil engineer with 44 years of diverse experience in pumped storage and conventional power plant operations, water resources, and hydroelectric engineering. He has hands-on technical and operational experience in the design, construction, and operation of pumped storage facilities, plant retrofit projects, and life extension projects. Mr. Miller’s previous experience includes providing civil engineering, power system resource planning, and pumped storage operations and grid integration as the former Pumped Storage Asset Manager at Duke Energy. He is currently serving as a Principal Hydropower Consultant for HDR and leads the pumped storage and hydropower modernization practice. Mr. Miller is also involved in industry activities, having served as President of the National Hydropower Association (NHA) from 2008 to 2009 and chaired NHA’s Markets Task Force that focused on the valuation of hydropower’s strategic flexibility. In addition, he has presented solar/wind/pumped storage integration technical papers at various hydropower association conferences and authored articles in Hydro Review and Power Engineering magazines. In 2016, Mr. Miller received the distinguished Dr. Kenneth Henwood Award from NHA for his dedication and service to the hydropower industry.

Mr. Miller holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Auburn University and a master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering from the University of South Carolina.
