Optimizing Hybrid Energy Systems for Data Center Power

February 11, 2025 | 3:00 PM - 3:45 PM | Room C145

The rapidly accelerating data center market will not be possible without reliable, sustainable and affordable power. In this case study, we’ll analyze a data center’s needs and design a system that balances renewable energy, stable backup power and cost-effectiveness. The presentation of this use case, the various identified energy system designs and the overarching system implications will contribute to the development of more sustainable and cost-competitive future data center power solutions.

Data Centers and Small Modular Reactors: The (Not-So) Perfect Pairing?

February 12, 2025 | 2:00 PM - 2:45 PM | Room C147

The nuclear industry is buzzing with excitement about the possibility of pairing Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) with data centers to create clean energy technology hubs. However, the feasibility of this arrangement may not be so simple: While SMRs offer a reliable, clean energy source, data centers experience rapid fluctuations in power demand that can destabilize the grid. This presentation will highlight energy management solutions like advanced energy packet-based energy metering with user disturbance monitoring algorithms and continuous waveform recording. These solutions can help preserve the system stability at subcycle control speeds, ensuring a successful SMR–to-data center project.
